Ahead of the launch of the 5G network in India, Delhi IGI becomes the first 5G ready Airport

The 5G launch in India was done by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the India Mobile Congress, New Delhi on October 1st. The fifth-gen cellular connectivity is now live in the country and will be available to 75 per cent of the population by the end of 2022.

Since then cellular companies like Airtel and jio are ready with their tariff plans and network settings for the users. The launch took place in Mumbai and Delhi initially and will be available to 75 per cent of the population by the end of 2022.

Airtel has announced the launch of 5G services in eight cities across India, while Jio 5G commenced on the 5th of October 2022. This will be followed by Vi 5G rollout in the country. BSNL 5G launch in India has also been announced.

But what really is a 5G network and what changes will it bring?

Well, 5G, short for the fifth generation, is a new global wireless standard that succeeds the 4G network, which provides connectivity to most smartphones out there. Higher multi-Gbps speeds, lower latency, and more reliability compared to the previous-generation mobile networks are some of the benefits of the fifth-generation network. The network also presents use cases against AR/VR, AI, and high-speed broadband, among others to users.

5G ready Delhi IGI; Things travellers should know:

The country's busiest and largest runway is ready with 5G network infrastructure ahead of its rollout. The passenger can use the 5G enabled advanced mobile services at the terminals. The flyers arriving or departing from the runway can now experience the power of the 5th generation of mobile network technology (5G).

The passengers can avail of 5G connectivity once these services are rolled out by the Telecom Service Providers (TSPs). Most airports at present provide wireless service primarily through Wi-Fi to passengers. Wi-Fi relies on the unlicensed spectrum which is free for anyone to use.

In a statement, Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) said that with a 5G network passengers will be able to enjoy a 20 times faster data speed over the available Wi-Fi system. Such a network would allow passengers quicker downloads, zero buffering during streaming and seamless execution of resource-intensive applications.

Flyers having a 5G-enabled mobile phone set and SIM card can experience better signal strength, seamless connectivity and faster data speed at the domestic departure pier and international arrival baggage area at Terminal 3, and between T3 arrivals and multi-level car parking (MLCP), DIAL stated

The 5G network has been set up with the in-building solutions (IBS) technique in collaboration with telecom service providers. Trials have been completed and 5G infrastructure has been put up at the MLCP entrance, inside the terminal and at Aerocity.

"Delhi Airport always remains ahead in bringing new-gen technologies to the passengers. To enhance their experience at the airport we have built our own 5G infrastructure. Passengers can experience unified signal strength, seamless connectivity, negligible latency, and unimaginable data speed. It will lead to greater efficiencies and aid in faster decision-making for airports.
